Aquatest PO4<\/sub> for measurement of phosphate<\/a> concentration PO4 <\/sub>in fresh and seawater in the range of 0 \u2013 5 mg\/L<\/p>\n

Why to measure phosphate?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The decomposition of organic substances (uneaten feed, decomposition of plants and algae, excrement, and dead fish) generates phosphates in aquarium water. Phosphates do not directly harm fish, but the elevated level leads to algae bloom. Green water can decrease the oxygen level, which in turn can harm fish.<\/p>\n

Plants require phosphates for growth. The necessary phosphate level depends directly on the amount of nitrates present. The ratio of nitrates (NO3<\/sub><\/a>) to phosphates (PO4<\/sub>) should ideally fall between 10:1 and 20:1 in aquariums\/ponds with plants. Algae growth in the water depends directly on this ratio. In a fish tank, the ideal phosphate level should be below 0.05 ppm (0.05mg\/L). At 1.0 ppm (1.0 mg\/L), algae start to grow. Algae blooms at 2 – 3 ppm.<\/p>\n

      How to stabilize phosphate?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

      Phosphate levels can be controlled through water changes, aquarium cleaning, and phosphate absorbers, but the latter should be the last means. Also, review feeding habits and feed quality, as some feed contain phosphates for preservation. Remove excess feed and plant from the aquarium, and clean the filter.<\/p>\n

      It is advisable to conduct a phosphate test if algae are present in the aquarium or if plants are not growing as expected.<\/p>\n
